Reflections - 13 years of Putting a VNA into Practice

Presented by:

Prof. Steve G. Langer, PhD, DABR, CIIP
Professor of Radiologic Physics and Imaging Informatics, Mayo Clinic Radiology
Mayo Clinic

The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, is home to the original TeraMedica vendor neutral archive (VNA). Initiated in 2001 and fully deployed in 2003, Mayo Clinic has implemented what is possibly the world’s largest enterprise clinical image management solution. The primary goal of the VNA was, and still remains today, to provide access to any image, anywhere, anytime for patient care.

During this comprehensive presentation, we will explore the benefits achieved and obtained through the use of Mayo Clinic’s VNA solution. We will also discuss lessons learned and how the process could have been enhanced for even greater results. Finally, we will consider how the VNA may evolve within the organization’s vast clinical ecosystem.

Enterprise Imaging - To the summit and back, a Sherpa’s perspective

Presented by:

Jef Williams, MBA, CIIP
Ascendian Healthcare Consulting, Inc.

Shawn McKenzie, MPA
President, CEO
Ascendian Healthcare Consulting, Inc.

The decision to adopt an enterprise imaging strategy must be made carefully, across the leadership and governance structure, with representation by every stakeholder group affected or invested into this initiative. One of the critical steps is to clearly define the organizations interpretation of enterprise imaging. This definition will drive the approach, specifically the technical decision and design, of the architecture that will support the strategy. The components of enterprise imaging are largely agreed to be image capture, workflow, visualization, reporting, exchange, distribution, interoperability, integration to the EHR and access for secondary use. While each of these cannot be overlooked, the VNA and its functionality, if determined to be part of the strategy, will be fundamental to achieving the required outcomes.

At this informative event, we will discuss lessons learned from working with clients across the U.S. and some of the best practices we’ve discovered in adopting and deploying an Enterprise Imaging strategy.
